Towed by a heavy-duty pickup truck or a medium-duty specialty tow vehicle, 5th wheel trailers offer some of the largest living and sleeping areas of any type of RV, along with many deluxe amenities found in high-end Class A motorhomes. “5th wheel” refers to the hitch mounted in the bed of the truck, which accepts the trailer’s king pin and locks it into place. The trailer pivots over the rear axle of the truck rather than behind the truck like a standard travel trailer with a ball coupler-type hitch. This configuration gives the 5th wheel trailer some advantages in handling over a similarly-sized travel trailer.
5th wheel trailers range in length from around 31 to 39 feet. New models start at about $40,000, ranging up to about $120,000. Most require a three-quarter ton or larger pickup truck for safe towing.
