Onan Genset producing too much voltage.(burning things out)

I have a onan BGM series "D" genset in my rv it is producing 230 volts instead of 120v i have replaced several voltage regulators and it just fries them. the rpm,s seems to be right, wires have not been changed and was ok at one time. did a bench test of stator wires and rotor and were a little higher but no shorts. i am baffled !!! MODEL: 5BGMFA26105D SERIAL: J943242861 1995 vintage any help would be appreciated. Alex.

There are several possibilities in this scenario… you don’t mention the Hertz only the Volts A/C. What are the Hertz? Are you measuring A/C Voltage from the black wire to the white wire coming out of the gen set, or are you measuring black to black? Your gen set is a 120/240 volt unit. It sounds like you have the two black wires together in either the “J” Box connection or the Automatic Changeover. Each leg (black wire) should be separate in order to provide 50 amps, 120 VAC, 60 Hertz to the breaker box. I hope this helps ~ Giovanni

thanks for the quick response, i am measuring directly from the black wires to white before the breaker. I have disconnected it completely from the motorhome as it was burning things out. I have had to replace several things because of the high voltage. my tests have been j1 to white 230volts ...could my rectifier be bad?? i am on #4 voltage regulator but dont want to put it into the system till i know it wont burn it out again. alex.

Are the black wires together with a wire nut? They should be separate. Measure one black wire to white, what do you get? What are the Hertz? Giovanni

There is no wire nut, I am measuring between one black wire and the white wire and again from the other black wire to white. I am sure it is single Phase. it is weird ! could the stator be shorting out? or the rotor? if i add a voltage regulator it will just burn it out. ( i could replace appliances with european and i would be good! )this is a strange one. any suggestions? The rpm seems to be right, so it is being excited ok. Alex.

Alex, Your GenSet has the following stator windings. T-1 & T-3 which are Hot Windings, T-2 & T-4 which are Neutral Windings, Q-1 & Q-2 which feed the VR-1 Voltage Regulator. You should go to the Terminal Strip L-1. This could be shorted or wires connected together there. T-1 & L-1 should go to CB-2. T-3 & L-2 shoulg go to CB-1. The wires should not touch together anywhere. T-1 & T-3 = Hot Wires, T-2 & T-4 = Neutral. Go to LO & L1 on the Terminal Strip, remove the wires and measure Ohms Resistance. T-1 to T-2 should read .327 Ohms +/-, T-3 to T-4 should read .327 Ohms +/-. Readings out of parameter could indicate s shorted Stator. I hope this helps ~ Giovanni
